Tuesday is Recycling Day!

Whuddp!  Hope you had a fun and safe 4th yesterday and enjoyed the remix of my, now spiffier than ever, website.  Frankly I am shocked I got it together so fast, serious I made that statement and then thought about the time line and was like, “DOH!  I am never going to get all these changes done…” always nice to prove yourself wrong from time to time…So, today like usual is my Recycling of an artist profile written by the homie Adam B  but this one also is doubly recycled as it is posted on Rapreviews.com the very same site stupid enough or generous enough to carry my podcast Subways & Sidewalks…hey it’s a family affair in this web game.  Also I will be posting a few pretty sweet videos that have been sent to me recently in addition to an amazing video of the most neck-snappingest break I have heard in forever.  Enjoy!

Playdough – Arts and Crafts on the Mic

For most people the word Playdough conjures up images of the clay-like toy we all played with as little kids. Hip-hop fans should get used to a second idea popping into their heads when they hear the word, and that’s Dallas, Texas, emcee Playdough, whose latest album Hotdoggin, just recently hit stores. This Playdough’s fun factory would be where he puts his music together, and this week RapReviews caught up with him to find out more about his music, his interesting connections to the church, and all the wild hotdog imagery on his album, including a hint at who the cover model erotically downing a dog might be. We also discussed doing Elisabeth Shue. It makes sense in context. Really, it does.

Tuesday Video Corner

Lyrics Born ft. Sam Sparro – Woulda Coulda Shoulda

The funky left coast resident himself released a new album (As You Were) this year on Decon and it BANGED.  Now, one of the stand outs on the album is now a funky ass video for your enjoyment…

Longevity – Tantrum

WOE!  This is one of the hottest Hip-Hop joints I have heard all year.  Another banger for the Decon Records camp…these cats are on the come up like whut.  Keep an eye out because they will be the sound of east coast rap since the void left by Def Jux…

Playdough – The Difference

Since he is featured in the above section I thought I might share my favorite song off his album ‘Don’t Drink The Water’.  Used to do a pretty nasty doubles routine with this track too and cut up the intro over a long outro instrumental.  Sorry got a bit carried off in my reverie there…

Funky Bijou – Funky Bijou Anthem

I first heard this track in Music Avenue (Peace to the homie DJ Maze!) in Paris thanks to the homie DJ LoScar and was immediately like, ‘YO! Who is this???” and subsequently he bought the 7″ on the spot for me…what a guy!  This is by FAR the most neck snappingest (yeah, I make up words. Sue Me) break I have heard in forever.  Not only that, but it is a really bizarre and entertaining video to boot!  Enjoy and you can thank me later…

Ruff Mix Mondays and Site Relaunch News!!!

HOLY C-R#P!!!  Yeah Yeah Yeah it’s been a while since I posted here; life has really been getting in the way BIGTIME, but I have also been taking this time to rethink the site and where it is going…hmmmm.  So I am going to post these couple of mixes a give you a site news update and bounce for a while.  There’s still a TON of great content on here to go through so feel free to check the other pages out, the archive, and other whatknots till I relaunch on July 4th.

HALO DOESNT SUCK SITE RELAUNCH on JULY 4TH!!!

As I mentioned before life has really be getting all up in my ass, so following the wise advice of ATCQ, I decided to work it out and will be relaunching Halodoesntsuck.com on July 4th with a ton of changes and other modifications that I think will really make the site more enjoyable for you (not that it isn’t super great as is, but you gotta grow and all that hippie wisdom nonsense).

RUFF MIX MONDAYS!!!

Here are a bunch of newer mixes I have done that are in my usual ‘hit record and see what happens’ style…

NJ TRANSIT

I mix I did as a teaser for a Party my homies threw in NJ; hence the name.  Click the Cover or Link above to Download…

KITCHEN SINK #1

A new live show I do every Saturday afternoon from 2-4pm (yup, PM!!!) on RWD.fm, in addition to my show there’s a slew of other great shows on there from DJs all over the world!  I would highly advise checking out the site and schedule to peep some of the great talent on that station…BIGGUP to the WabberJocky for putting it all together!!!  Click the Cover art or Link above to Download…

DJ HALO’S BEST OF DECON RECORDS

A mix I did to augment a prize pack I gave away as part of the ‘Decon Records Back Catalog Contest’ in conjunction with my Morning Show on WPKN.  It’s a tracked out zip file (yeah I got all fancy pants with this mix) that contains the tracks, all the metadata and the cover art…pretty sweeet!  Click the Cover art or Link above to Download…

Here There Be Dragons…

Feakout Friday!!! RIP Nate Dogg and More!!!

YO, YO!!!  So first a Hip-Hop Legend was lost this week with the passing of Nate Dogg the best hook man in the industry HANDS DOWN (Are you taking notes AKON???) and he will be sorely missed but not forgottena as there is sure to be a slew of ‘Unreleased’ joints and ‘Collabs’ that will inundate us to the point of nausea in the next few months.  But that is the way the industry works, ‘Ohhh Word???  Dude’s dead???  Let’s get a few bucks outta that…”  Sad really, but at least it perpetuates the memory of a great artist, so it can’t be all bad.  Also I have a new Remix from the Homie Brzowski and details of my (cue the booming god -like voice please…) DECON RECORDS BACK CATALOG CONTEST.  So let’s get down to business and oh yeah, TGIF yo…

RIP NATE DOGG…

Hip-Hop lost one of it’s shiniest stars this week with the passing of Nate Dogg; a man you could always could on for an amazing hook and great lines all day (Smoke Weeeed Everryday…).  But as such he will always be remembered through his music and the impact this godfather of the ‘G-Funk Era’ had on Hip-Hop as a whole.  This man PIONEERED the gangster ass R&B hook, no small feat there, so to that end I present to you two tributes to the aweseomnocity of the man, the myth, the LEGEND…Nate Dogg

Exhibit #1 Steve1der ‘Nate in 08’ Mix

This mix is just simply AHHHMAZING, I cannot say any more good things about it because I will be very jealous it was not me who mixed it…but GODDDAMMMM Steve1der did it HUGE with this one and not even as a post mortem tribute either, that says something about the artist for sure.  I would HIGHLY recommend a listen at least if not a DL and daily bumpage…

Exhibit #2 Warren G, You Useless, Useless Bastard

Again, I wish I was the one to have written such a hilarious and insightful diatribe on the song regulate and what it said about the to characters in the song (Warren G & Nate Dogg)…buuut all I can do is bask in the reflected glory of reposting it (reflected glory, refecccted glooorrry!!!).  Biggup to my sister Rikki for putting me on to this and the homie Sean Keane for writing a hell of a dessertation on the song ‘Regulate’…Peep game…

In my informal capacity as future analyst and hip-hop theorist, I will take the time to consider seminal efforts in the field of rap music. Before you question my credentials, let me assure “y’all” that I regularly wore a San Francisco Giants cap backwards from 1994 until the summer of 2002.

The song “Regulate,” by Warren G and Nate Dogg, tells the story of a dramatic night in the LBC. There is sex, there is violence, there is bass, there is treble. Nate Dogg cruises for skirts, guns down rival homies, and beds down triumphantly at the East Side Motel. Nate emerges the ideal G-Funk man. By contrast, Warren G tries to join a craps game, gets mugged, and is nearly killed. He comes off as completely ineffectual, dependent on Nate for protection, and trick acquisition.
