Getting loose with a dj edit of the original and mixing w a Mombahton remix of the famous song that sampled it. A recent set at Vinyl Index. in Somerville, MA. Where I used scratching initially to introduce a transition but ended up switching to finger drumming with a cue point for the final mix. Taking a journey with a transition can start off rocky but morph into something unique if you stick with it and just have fun with the tools at your disposal. Back in the 90’s and early 2000’s Jive records was having popular electronic and electro artists remix older rap tracks from their catalog. Artists like KRS One, Kool Moe Dee, Stone Roses, Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince, ect. A homie put me through n to the original compilation on cd and I have been collecting 12” singles from this short lived experiment from Jive Electro ever since. These tracks across 3 full album compilations are all bangers, but to me there is one super stand out to me personally. Mixing a dance disco track into a Latin polyrhythmic track. Sometimes things sound great in headphones but go wrong in your final mix attempt. When in doubt bail out is still best course, but sometimes you are too far into a mix to do so. What do you do then? Mixing two tracks with a ton of polyrhythmic drums happening can get super confusing in your headphones and over the speakers if you are not careful. Before attempting make sure you can find the main drum of both tracks or an element that is on time for the bpm you are mixing at. From there in headphones bring in the elements to hear how they will over lay on each other. Once you’ve established that begin your mix hopefully using a breakdown to mix out of or in with.
